The annual Festival of Cultures of the Countries in the Asian and Pacific Region (APR) will open on 5th of October in the Primorsky Region's Philharmonic. The goal of the project is the possibility to present the best artistic collectives of the Asia-Pacific Region.
The festival of the APR will open the Japanese opera "the Cherry Blossom of Hope", which is dedicated to Chiune Sugihara. It will be performed in two acts with the participation of the choir of the Far Eastern Federal University. For participation in the program, the large troupe is planning to arrive from the Japanese side.
The opera tells the story of the Chiune Sugihara, who has served as the vice-consul of the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania. Shortly after the inclusion of Lithuania to the Soviet Union, he has helped more than 6 thousand Polish and Lithuanian Jews, who have been escaping from the Nazis. He has been in charge of Japanese transit visas, which enabled the possibility to enter the Far East through the Soviet land.
The director of the Primorsky Region's Philharmonic, Anna Aleko, has commented that the story of the Chiune Sugihara is closely connected with the history of Vladivostok and the town of Nakhodka. Through the Far Eastern ports, the refugees with the transit visas were escaping to Japan.
The opera performance is organized with the assistance of the sponsor. The event aims to raise funds for oncology patients.
